Redirecting Htttp://domain.com To Http://www.mydomain.com Without .htaccess?

I moving from a shared to a VPS server and have noticed that non www domains are not being redirected to having the www. I have read how to do this with a .htaccess file on each domain but I’m thinking my old host had apache configured to do this all the time?
(I want SSL https:// to work still)
